What is IELTS?
IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System – an English Language proficiency test. Globally, there are more than 4 million test takers a year, making IELTS the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration.
What is special about IELTS?
IELTS is the most widely accepted English language test that uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English communication skills. This means that you have a real-life conversation with a real person. This is the most natural way of testing your English skills and it is very popular, compared to talking into a computer on a machine prompt.
Test writers from different English-speaking countries develop IELTS content so it reflects real-life situations.
Who accepts IELTS?
IELTS is accepted by more than 12.000 organisations worldwide in over 140 countries. These include 100% of universities in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK and over 3,400 institutions and programs in the USA, schools, immigration authorities, government agencies, professional bodies and (multinational) companies.
It is also accepted by Department of Home Affairs Australia, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), Immigration New Zealand and UK Visas & Immigration, as well as by a vast array of employers globally.
IELTS (not Life Skills) is also accepted by the Danish Immigration Service for residency applications for Denmark.
Who is behind IELTS?
IELTS is developed and run by the British Council in partnership with IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English.
What types of the test are there?
IELTS is aimed at people who want to study in an English-speaking environment, work in or emigrate to an English-speaking country, or get a job in your own country where English proficiency is required. For this reason, there are two IELTS tests to choose from:
IELTS Academic This test can help you secure university acceptance, student visas, and prove your English ability to professional organisations.
IELTS General Training This test measures your English proficiency in the workplace and is often useful to prove your level when applying for a new position in an English-speaking company or organisation.
For UK Visa applications only:
IELTS for UKVI ("SELT" IELTS)
The contents of IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are exactly the same. However, if you are applying for a visa to study in, move to or remain in the UK, you may need a "SELT English test" with procedures accepted by UKVI (UK Visa and Immigration).
You can choose IELTS for UKVI Academic or General Training. Check with the relevant authorities which IELTS you need to take.
IELTS Life Skills
IELTS Life Skills is for UK immigration visa applications only.
Life Skills B1 can not be used for immigration to Denmark. Book a regular IELTS instead, accepted by the Danish authorities.
